Rocky Mount, Va. (February 28, 2018) – The Fresh coalition hosted a middle school dance at the Franklin County Family YMCA that had over 150 kids participating. The event had a DJ, dancing, an inflatable obstacle course, photo booth and other interactive activities provided by the Rocky Mount Police Department, the Family Resource, Piedmont Community Services, Henry Fork Center and other area agencies. Entry was free to all area middle school students and ran from 8pm to 10pm.

The intent of the evening was to discourage substance abuse by offering fun alternatives and education about the perils of drug use. A group of high school students, as a part of an organization called “CHILL” setup an interactive presentation that emphasized how important it is to be careful when accepting drinks from strangers and acquaintances in social settings.

“The event was a lot of fun for the kids but they really learned a lot about the dangers that are associated with substance abuse,” says Tony Wright a representative from FRESH and leader of CHILL.

The Fresh coalition and the Y plan on offering several more events throughout the rest of the school year including an After Prom event for Juniors and Seniors on April 28th.

“It’s really important for kids at this age to learn that they can have a great time without drugs and alcohol and to begin to develop lasting friendships,” says Jamie Stump Childcare Coordinator with the YMCA.
